About Fog City Research Association

Fog City Research Association (FCRA) is a scientific and educational non-profit committed to expanding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education through high-quality educational programming. Our work spans K-12 schools to universities, with a focus on creating opportunities to engage in hands-on, project-based learning. Research shows that students who participate in in extracurricular STEM activities are significantly more likely to pursue and succeed in STEM fields - but access to these programs is often limited in under-resourced schools and communities. We aim to close that gap by offering educational workshops, mentoring, and financial and organizational assistance

About the Position

FCRA is seeking enthusiastic, supportive, and tech-savvy mentors to guide high school students through a transformative summer learning experience in data science. As a mentor, you’ll support student learning, foster curiosity, and help cultivate a positive, inclusive environment for young learners to explore coding and data storytelling. The summer program will be held remotely via Google Meet and will primarily cater to High School students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mentorship and academic support to students during one or two camp sessions.
  • Assist with instruction in Python, data analysis, and visualization tools.
  • Facilitate small-group activities, discussions, and collaborative projects.
  • Offer encouragement and feedback on student work and presentations.
  • Monitor student progress and flag any issues to the program team.
  • Contribute to a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Attend mentor training and weekly check-in meetings with staff.

How to Qualify

  • Minimum of one year of demonstrable coding experience, either through education, work, or projects.
  • Proficiency in Python and basic data analysis libraries (i.e., pandas, matplotlib, seaborn)
  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and educational access.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Current college student or recent graduate in computer science, data science, computer engineering, or related fields.
  • Prior teaching experience, especially in a data/computer science or related field.
  • Experience in a non-profit setting is a plus.

Schedule and Commitment

The FCRA Summer Program will be broken into two four-week long online sessions. For each week of each session they work, we anticipate that mentors will have to participate in:

  • 6-8 hours of teaching time.
  • 2 hours of office hours.
  • 2-3 hours of training, team check-ins, and other administrative work, including a 2-day orientation prior to each session.

Stipend

Mentors will earn a $500 stipend per session worked. Mentors who work both sessions will earn $1000. Mentors will be paid out at the end of each session.
